KUALA LUMPUR - Khairul Aming, the 'Sambal Nyet' entrepreneur, won the Creator Of The Year at the 2023 TikTok Awards Malaysia held at MITEC on Sunday.
The 31-year-old Kelantanese, whose real name is Khairul Amin Kamarulzaman, defeated other contenders, including Boss James, Lawyer Gandhi, Auntie Purple, Ceddy, and Sally, in the People's Choice category determined by public voting.
Known for his Ramadan cooking content, he attributed his success to family, fellow creators, and his business team.
"After 8 years, unexpected recognition came as a content creator. I began by recording simple videos, like cooking on a chair.
"Now, with my own studio and factories in Kota Bharu, I am grateful to my followers for their support all these years. Malaysian traditional cuisine has always been my passion," said Khairul, who has more than 3.7 million Instagram followers.
Winning the award was a tearful surprise and a stepping stone for future goals, he added.
"It is vital to stay updated through research, learning from foreign videos, and understanding trends.
"Despite TV offers, I stay true to my online journey. I’ll continue creating for online supporters and might consider TV in the future without switching to acting or singing," he added.
Yin Yin Hooi, TikTok Malaysia's Head of Operations and Marketing, praised local content creators for their efforts in pushing boundaries and producing imaginative content. This content has the potential to inspire communities and should be recognised accordingly.
Themed "Big On The Small Screen," the awards ceremony was broadcast live on TV3 and also live-streamed through TikTok Malaysia.
