KUALA LUMPUR - A activist has urged for a probe to be conducted on the police force for allegedly being involved in corruption and abuse of power.
Speaking to the reporters today, Persatuan Harapan Indian Malaysia chairman Mani Maran Manickam urged the Human Rights Commission of Malaysia (Suhakam) to look into the matter.
"I am bringing this issue to Suhakam because there is abuse of power among some officers in the police force and I don't want other people to become victims
"This might have happened to other races as well since some of the victims are afraid to voice out, I don't want anyone else to be the victim due to some irresponsible police personnel
"We have to stop such abuses of power," he said in a press conference at the Suhakam headquarters.
Mani Maran further urged Suhakam to investigate this issue thoroughly.
This is because such matters are becoming rampant among the police force.
He also urged Inspector-General of Police Tan Sri Razarudin Husain and Deputy Inspector-General of Police Datuk Seri Ayob Khan Mydin Pitchay look into the corruption practices among police personnel.
"I hope the police department with the presence of Datuk Ayob Khan will look into this matter and bring positive changes in the police department.
"I also hope my case will be investigated again before accusing me as the suspect.
"If the policemen involved is guilty, he should be stopped from working immediately because they do not deserve to be a policemen," he stressed.
Earlier, Mani Maran alleged a policemen attached to a district police headquaters had abused his power as a policeman by taking sides with suspected criminals and drug dealers.
"Back in 2021, my wife was threatened and harrassed by a local man (believed to be a drug dealer in Kampung Jawa, Klang) who grabbed my wife's gold chain while we were waiting at a traffic light.
"While I was on my way to make a police report at the Klang Police Station, the suspect and his friends chased my car while throwing big stones at the back of my car.
"I filed a police report by attaching some video recordings that I recorded during the incident as an evidence, however my case was not investigated under 'theft' which made me to suspect that the alleged investigation officer was in cahoots with the suspect.
"Months later, I received a call from the Klang police station who requested me and wife to give a statement because the suspect in my case initially gave a police report against me saying that I threatened him while he was throwing stones on my car," he said.
However, Mani Maran expressed his dissapointment on how he became the suspect in an incident where he was clearly the victim.
"I was shocked because my wife and I were the victim of the incident but I became the suspect and the case was investigated under section 506 of the penal code.
"We were also told by the investigation officer that I am being investigated because of the pressure from the superior and I was asked to confess in the court.
"I rejected the request because my wife and I are the victims," he said.
Not only that, Mani Maran said his name is under the 'wanted' list, which is why he submitted a memorandum to Suhakam to take action on this case.
Suhakam Commisioner Ragunathan Kesavan, took note of the complaint and requested Mani Maran to submit more information and evidence so that the case can be investigated thoroughly.
