KUALA LUMPUR - The first year of Datuk Seri Najib Razak's prison sentence has left scars on supporters and families of the former prime minister.
A year has passed since Najib's family and supporters have committed themselves to the cause of ‘freeing’ the former Umno president who was found guilty on the charges of embezzling RM42 million of SRC International Sdn Bhd funds.
Najib’s daugther Nooryana Najwa in a recent update on her social media expressed her feelings and claimed that her father’s year in Kajang Prison was a cruel period for the former Pekan MP to go through.
"It has been a year since DSN (Najib) was imprisoned. Through all the ups and downs, heartache and disappointment last year.
"I’m still in awe of your commitment to always do the right thing and choose the virtuous path in a complex world full of deception and injustice.
"You once told me that leadership is a battlefield full of cuts and bruises. Only strategic thinking and resilience can prepare one’s self,” she wrote on her Instagram.
She uploaded a poster with ‘After a Year, Najib Continues to be Oppressed’ the Puteri Umno Exco added she vowed to stay at her father’s side in the struggle for justice.
Earlier it was reported that Najwa had said that the struggle to gain a fair trial for Najib would be continued.
In March, the Federal Court had rejected Najib’s appeal to review case and the conviction and 12-year prison sentence as well as the fines from the SRC International case.
On Aug 23, 2022, for the first time in history Najib became the first former prime minister to be imprisoned for 12 years in Kajang Prison.
Najib currently faces three more court cases including the embezzlement of RM2.3 billion of 1Malaysia Development Berhad (1MDB) funds that is now on trila with the prosecution calling its 46th witness former Bank Negara Malaysia (BNM) Governor Tan Sri Zeti Akhtar Aziz.
Two more cases of criminal breach of trust totalling RM6.6 billion involving payments to International Petroleum Investment Company (IPIC) and money laundering of SRC International funds worth RM27 million each is at the case management level.
For the record on July 4, 2018, Najib was charged in the Kuala Lumpur Sessions Court on three charges of breach of trust and one charge of misuse of power regarding the SRC funds and the case was transferred to the High Court.
He was charged in the High Court on Aug 8 on three charges of money laundering activities.
