SANDAKAN - Sabah pig farmers have decided to lower the prices of live pig supplies to butchers by 10 to 15 per cent following recovery from the African Swine Fever (ASF) outbreak.
Agriculture and Food Security Deputy Minister Chan Foong Hin said he was informed of the decision recently by the Sabah Livestock Association (SLA) which he commended as the outbreak had heavily impacted the local livestock industry and caused a price hike due to short supply.
"This price adjustment reflects the ongoing efforts of our farmers, whose dedication to improving productivity remains pivotal.
"It is anticipated that these reductions will remain in effect as long as our farmers continue to enhance their productivity levels," he said in a statement here today.
Chan expressed gratitude to the local farmers who have diligently followed the guidelines and regulations set by the Sabah Veterinary Services Department (DVS) to combat the ASF outbreak over the past 18 months.
"Their commitment has resulted in the successful control and containment, with no new cases of ASF reported.
"Indeed, prior to the ASF outbreak in 2021, Sabah had achieved self-sufficiency in pork production, meeting the local market demand of approximately 10,000 live pigs per month," he said. -Bernama
