SHAH ALAM – The world of photojournalism mourns the loss of a talented and dedicated soul, Raj Kumar Soman, who passed away today at 3.59am due to health complications at Hospital Kuala Lumpur. He was 62 years old.
Born in 1961, Raj Kumar Soman's journey through life was a tapestry woven with determination, passion, and a keen eye for the most remarkable moments.
His early years were spent in the embrace of the armed forces, where he served as a captain for 15 years, dedicating his youth to safeguarding his nation.
Little did the world know that this very dedication would later translate into his meticulous approach to documenting history.
In 1993, Raj Kumar Soman embarked on a new chapter as he joined the theSun newspaper, becoming an integral part of its legacy.
His transition from the military to the world of journalism might have seemed like a leap, but it was this very background that instilled in him a sense of discipline and dedication that set him apart as a photo editor and journalist.
Among his most notable accomplishments was his fearless coverage of the Iraq War in April 2003.
His lenses became a window to the harrowing realities of conflict, capturing images that spoke volumes about the human cost of war. It was for this unparalleled coverage that he was bestowed with the prestigious Ahli Mangku Negara award by the Yang-Dipertuan Agong, a testament to his commitment to bringing the truth to the forefront.
Raj Kumar's talents extended beyond the battlefield.
He had an uncanny ability to encapsulate the essence of political dynamics through his camera lens.
One of his most iconic photographs, perhaps etched into the annals of Malaysia's political history, was the poignant image of then Prime Minister Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad and Deputy Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim seated together for the last time during the Umno General Assembly.
This photograph served as a visual epitaph to a chapter that would soon give way to seismic shifts in the political landscape. He retired from theSun in 2020.
Beyond the accolades and achievements, Raj Kumar was a loving husband to Ceciela Augustin, a steadfast partner who stood by his side through all his endeavours.
He leaves behind a legacy that is embraced not just by the world of journalism but by his three children, who carry forward his values of dedication and the pursuit of truth.
As the sun sets on his extraordinary life, the light he brought to the world through his lens will continue to illuminate generations to come.
Farewell, Raj Kumar Soman, your legacy will forever inspire and guide.
Funeral services will be held at Sentul KAVI Hindu Crematorium on Aug 22 at 3pm.
