ALOR SETAR - The candidates for the Kedah Menteri Besar post will be determined by the leadership of Perikatan Nasional (PN) and the list will be announced soon.
State PN chairman Datuk Seri Muhammad Sanusi Md Nor said the matter was beyond his knowledge and he was unsure whether his name was listed as a candidate for the Menteri Besar post to continue leading Kedah after PN's significant victory in the state.
He said the party and the state secretary's office (SUK) was handling the matter.
"This is being managed by the party and the SUK. Whether they put my name or someone else's name as the candidate, I don't know.
"The PN leadership will decide, not me. I don't know if my name is on the list or not," he said during a press conference after PN was announced as the winner of the Kedah state election at the Pas complex in Kota Sarang Semut today.
The PN election director said that the interim state government led by him was still functioning until the appointment of the new Kedah Menteri Besar.
"Our position cannot be upon request; that is the discipline in Pas," he said.
PN chairman and Parti Pribumi Bersatu Malaysia (Bersatu) president Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin announced that PN will propose the names of the new Menteri Besar candidates in the three states won by the coalition in the upcoming state elections.
He said this was to seek the consent from the respective Sultans in Kedah, Kelantan, and Terengganu.
In the state elections, yesterday, PN emerged victorious in Kelantan, Terengganu and Kedah as well as in the Kuala Terengganu parliamentary seat, along with 11 seats in the State Legislative Assembly in Penang, 22 in Selangor and five in Negeri Sembilan.
Previously, Pas secretary-general Datuk Seri Takiyuddin Hassan denied the viral statement on social media regarding Pas rejecting Jitra state seat candidate Haim Hilman Abdullah as the new Kedah Menteri Besar.
He was reported to have said that the statement dated Aug 11 was false.
The statement stated that during the Pas central executive committee meeting held yesterday, among the decisions made was that Bersatu demanded that the Menteri Besar post be given to their candidate or the Jitra candidate.
The day before the polling day, Takiyuddin announced that Sanusi and Datuk Seri Dr Ahmad Samsuri Mokhtar would remain as the Menteri Besar of Kedah and Terengganu, respectively, if PN won the state election.
This decision was reached at the Pas central executive committee meeting in Rusila, Terengganu, chaired by Pas president Tan Sri Abdul Hadi Awang, but their appointments were still subjected to the consent of the respective Sultans of both states.
