SHAH ALAM - A massive wave of change of the federal government could occur if Perikatan Nasional (PN) emerges victorious in the state elections in six states this Saturday.
Its information chief Datuk Seri Mohamed Azmin Ali said this possibility was based on several scenarios, including the diminishing confidence among political allies of the unity government, especially in Borneo, towards the leadership of Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim.
"There is a likelihood (of a change of government). If we manage to retain the three states which are Kelantan, Terengganu and Kedah, as well as capture the other three states, it is undoubtedly a signal of the people's voices towards Putrajaya.
"They have placed high hopes on PN to expedite the nation's economic recovery and they have expressed this vote of confidence in PN. Hence, this message should be seriously taken into consideration by Putrajaya.
"I believe that coalition partners within the government are closely monitoring the situation, especially in Borneo. They want strong allies that are accepted by the people. If they see that Anwar and Datuk Seri Ahmad Zahid Hamidi are no longer receiving the support of the people, how can they expect to maintain power-sharing at the federal level? This is what is currently unfolding," he said.
He made these remarks during an interview on the 'Keluar Sekejap' programme hosted by former Umno youth chief Khairy Jamaluddin and former Umno information chief Shahril Hamdan, which was aired yesterday.
Azmin, who is also the Selangor PN chairman said currently, political parties in Sabah and Sarawak required a strong form of power-sharing and support from the people.
"I see that allies in Borneo want to see a strong and well-supported partnership when they see their allies in Peninsular Malaysia weakened and lacking popular support.
"Indeed, from a legal perspective, there is no provision that winning the state elections would automatically allow us to change the federal government. However, this is a matter of political consideration that must be taken into account by our Borneo allies and they want strong allies," he said.
The candidate for the Hulu Kelang State Legislative Assembly further explained that in the current political situation, it was difficult to interpret and predict what will happen next.
"We can't interpret the political situation. We can't predict the possibilty of a wave occurring but as allies within the government, we note that they are closely monitoring.
"Even if I were a partner in a company, I would want my co-partner to be profitable, strong, so that the company can progress," he said.
He emphasised that the state elections were not about seizing wealth or thrones but about responsibly managing an honest, sincere and truthful government for the people.
Last month, Anwar gave assurance that Gabungan Parti Sarawak (GPS) and Gabungan Rakyat Sabah (GRS) will continue to support and uphold the unity government after the state elections this Saturday.
