KLANG - The federal government has agreed to upgrade the Klang Municipal Council (MPK) to city status.
Local Government Development Minister Nga Kor Ming said the Cabinet unanimously approved the proposal on Tuesday.
He added that Klang would be the fourth city in Selangor after Petaling Jaya, Shah Alam and Subang Jaya.
"The upgrade means the MPK has the financial stability to offer effective, high-quality, and globally recognised municipal services that enhance the quality of life and well-being of the residents of Klang," he said at the Selangor Sentuhan Kasih Programme on Wednesday.
A ceremony would be held soon, Nga said, after Selangor Sultan Sharafuddin Idris Shah selects and announces the date.
Meanwhile, Nga said the ministry approved an allocation of RM5 million for the application of 21 projects by MPK, among them the Klang Port Market upgrade project and the pedestrian and bicycle path at the City Bridge.
