SHAH ALAM - Fraud syndicates are resorting to new tactics, including offering cash rewards to social media users, to deceive the public.
In a disturbing twist, these syndicates are now impersonating well-known social media influencers to carry out their scams.
According to Federal Police Commercial Crime Investigation Department (CCID) director Datuk Seri Ramli Mohammed Yoosuf, these fraudsters employ such tactics to extract personal information from unsuspecting users.
"These fraud syndicates masquerade as other individuals, utilising the profiles of well-known figures.
"They operate on various social media platforms, including Facebook, Instagram, and Whatsapp, and promote advertisements promising financial rewards," Ramli explained during an interview with Sinar on Friday.
He further added that once users fall for the scheme, they are directed to provide personal information by following a provided link.
The request for personal information is often disguised as a requirement for processing reward payments.
"Users often make the mistake of trusting these tactics and unknowingly provide their personal information, making them vulnerable victims," Ramli warned.
Ramli advised the public, mainly social media users, to exercise caution when encountering such advertisements.
"All of these advertisements are fraudulent. If something seems too good to be true, it most likely is not as simple as it appears in the advertisement or offer.
"Legitimate offers typically have a proper background or verification process in place, rather than suddenly presenting a reward," he cautioned.
Ramli stressed that users should refrain from divulging personal information to unknown parties under any circumstances.
"Never disclose any personal information. If you receive an offer in the form of a reward, always verify its authenticity first.
"Do not easily fall for the temptation of monetary rewards. When in doubt, conduct thorough checks to avoid falling victim to these fraud syndicates," he said.
