SHAH ALAM - A political battle is set to unfold as former Gerakan secretary-general Datuk Liang Teck Meng announces his intention to challenge Datuk Dominic Lau Hoe Chai for the Gerakan President's post in the upcoming party elections.
Liang said he his confidence to revive the party based on his leadership experience.
"I wish to announce my intention to contest for the post of National President in the upcoming Parti Gerakan Rakyat Malaysia party elections, " he said in a statement on his Facebook page.
"If elected, I am confident that my track record and experience as National Party Secretary-General, two-terms MP and National Water Service Commission (SPAN) Chairperson will help me to restore the dignity and revive the conscience of the party," he said.
Liang was Simpang Renggam MP for two terms from 2008 to 2018. He was also Gerakan secretary-general when the party was still a component of Barisan Nasional (BN).
Liang, however, lost the Simpang Renggam seat to former education minister Maszlee Malik in 2018.
Six states - Selangor, Negeri Sembilan, Penang, Kedah, Kelantan and Terengganu will hold polls by August.
Lau has announced that he will be contesting in Penang.
