SHAH ALAM - Umno leaders are prepared to engage in debates with opposition party leaders on Terengganu land ownership as the nation prepares for six state elections.
Umno Supreme Council Datuk Lokman Noor Adam said the timing of the debate is timely as it could offer insights to voters.
He said that the debate would primarily focus on governance issues, particularly concerning Pas-led states.
"Among the issues that can be raised is the alleged land grant by the Terengganu government to the leaders of the party.
"Another question that could be raised is the matter of previous floods in the state. How is it possible for Terengganu Menteri Besar Datuk Seri Dr Ahmad Samsuri Mokhtar was on holiday abroad while the state was experiencing a calamity?," he told Sinar.
Furthermore, he said the incompetence of Kedah and Kelantan's administration on water issue and "how the party's leaders can enjoy countless luxuries when the people are facing hardships."
Lokman said his participation in the debate provides support to any candidate with credibility but may lack eloquence in presenting their arguments.
On Tuesday, the Allied Coordinating Committee of Islamic NGOs (Accin) suggested that an open debate in the mainstream media be held between candidates especially the state and national leaders ahead of the polls later.
Meanwhile, Bersatu Armada chief Wan Ahmad Fayhsal Wan Ahmad Kamal left the decision to PN top leaders if they wanted him to represent the party for the debate.
He had said the best person would be the candidate.
Wan Fayhsal also observed that the debate generates intellectual vigor within the community.
"Certainly, the aspirations or policies of the Unity Government will be the subject matter of the debate," he assured.
