KUALA LUMPUR - The Public Works Ministry aims to maximise the use of Industrial Building System (IBS) and Building Information Modelling (BIM) in the country’s construction sector.

Its minister, Datuk Seri Alexander Nanta Linggi said the matter was tabled at the Special Meeting between the Cabinet and ministry secretaries-general on the half-term study of the 12th Malaysia Plan (12MP) today.

He said the maximised use of IBS and BIM is a high impact strategy capable of reducing the construction sector’s dependence on foreign workers through the strengthening of competencies and technology adaptation.

"With existing technology adaptation at 85.3 per cent for public projects and 81 per cent for private projects, I’m confident that the initiative to achieve 100 per cent can be accomplished with everyone’s support and cooperation.

"In addition, I’ve stressed on upskilling and reskilling training under the Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET) in the construction sector, in line with the Prime Minister’s intention to strengthen TVET programmes,” he posted on Facebook today.

Proactive measures taken by his ministry to make the initiative a success include the signing of a memorandum of understanding between CIDB Holdings and Malaysian Resources Corporation Berhad (MRCB) on June 7 to improve the syllabus on modular construction, which is a part of IBS technology. - Bernama
