SHAH ALAM - The issue of nurses' dress code should not be blown out of proportion.
Congress of Unions of Employees in the Public and Civil Services (Cuepacs) president Datuk Adnan Mat said priority should be put on the welfare of the people working in the public sector.
He said nurses' current uniform, long pants paired with long-sleeved shirts, was already considered appropriate and covered aurat (parts of the body that must be covered in Islam).
"Nurses in this country are currently burdened with a heavy workload, with some of them having to work overtime due to a shortage of staff.
"All parties need to prioritise these, especially in ensuring the welfare of these civil servants is taken care of so they can provide the best service.
"Cuepacs hopes that all MPs in Dewan Rakyat can bring up more pressing issues that will benefit the civil servants' welfare and public service delivery system.
Previously, Kuantan MP Wan Razali Wan Nor claimed that female nurses who work in government health facilities dress up tightly, following the western countries' dress code that reveals their body shape and is not syariah compliant.
He also urged the Health Ministry to review the dress code of female nurses in addition to considering giving flexibility to clinics and hospitals to provide an appropriate dress code.
