TAIPEI, Taiwan - A magnitude 5.3 earthquake struck the mountains of Pingtung County in southwestern Taiwan at 1.31pm on Saturday, according to the Central Weather Bureau.
The epicentre of the earthquake was 28.8 kilometres northeast of Pingtung County Hall at a depth of 10.3km, Central News Agency (CNA) quoted the bureau's Seismology Centre.
On Taiwan's 7-tier intensity scale, which gauges the degree of vibration people can feel and the amount of damage, the earthquake measured 4.0 both in Pingtung and Kaohsiung.
