SHAH ALAM - The National Union of Flight Attendants Malaysia (Nufam) has expressed its concern and called for appropriate action regarding Singaporean-born comedian Jocelyn Chia's recent remarks.
Nufam urges the government to ensure that Chia is not allowed on Malaysia Airlines flights or flights crossing the Malaysian borders until she apologises.
According to the Nufam Secretariat, Jocelyn's comments, which insulted Malaysians with cynical and derogatory statements, demonstrate a racist attitude on her part.
"Any parties making fun of our country, religion and race does not deserve to land in this beautiful and peaceful country.
"There's nothing funny when you have a family who has lost a loved one in any incident or the loss of a life while flying," the secretariat said in a statement today.
The statement went on to address Jocelyn's video clip, specifically the point where she laughed after mentioning that 'some jokes don't land,' referring to the tragic disappearance of flight MH370 on March 8, 2014, while en route from Kuala Lumpur International Airport to Beijing, China.
"Jocelyn, as a comedian, you have crossed the line by cynically referring to MH370. Your words indirectly hurt the families, children, and friends who are still mourning the loss of MH370.
"A professional comedian should not resort to desperate tactics like turning a tragedy into a joke. Such behavior is unprofessional and should not be used as material," the statement added.
