SHAH ALAM - Kedah Menteri Besar Datuk Seri Muhammad Sanusi Md Nor has no legal basis to his claim that Penang needs to be returned to Kedah.
According to DAP chairman Lim Guan Eng, Sanusi is strategising to gain political mileage for Perikatan Nasional (PN) to win Kedah in the upcoming state elections.
"It is important for 1.8 million Penangites to defend their state's sovereignty by giving PN a painful lesson for betraying Penang’s right to exist in Malaysia," he said in a statement today.
"Sanusi has doubled down on his claim that Penang belongs to Kedah by demanding that the Federal Constitution be amended to erase Penang from the map.
"If Penang can be so flippantly erased, then there is nothing to stop the fundamental rights and civil liberties of ordinary Malaysians from being eliminated by racial bigots and extremists," Lim said in a statement.
On May 30th, Sanusi had claimed that Penang is owned by Kedah while Perak and Perlis are the only states that have a border with Kedah.
He also said that he is awaiting confirmation from the Department of Survey and Mapping Malaysia regarding Kedah's border with other states.
He made this claim after signing a land and maritime boundary agreement between Kedah and Perlis, which covers 44.3 kilometres of land and 5.6 kilometres of maritime boundary, equivalent to three nautical miles.
His statement sent shockwaves throughout the nation, and especially irked Lim, who said that Sanusi's statement was not only insulting and upsetting to Penangites, but disregarded the principles of peace and harmony just for political mileage
