SHAH ALAM - Fugitive Jho Low is now believed to be under house arrest in Shanghai, China, according to Bradley Hope, co-author of the book "Billion Dollar Whale".
"Jho Low is under China's strict control due to negotiations with Malaysia and also because his patrons in the spy services were arrested and his partner in the China Communications Construction Company (CCCC) were dismissed," he said according to FMT.
Hope said Jho Low, the most wanted man in the 1Malaysia Development Berhad (1MDB) case had went from being an intelligence asset to a liability after Datuk Seri Najib Razak was defeated in the 2018 General Election.
Yesterday, Al Jazeera reported that the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) said Jho Low was believed to be 'hiding' in Macau.
Jho Low was charged in Malaysia and the United States for allegedly being the mastermind of the embezzlement of USD4.5 billion of 1MDB funds. Beijing previously denied protecting Jho Low.
Last night, a source from MACC confirmed that Kee Kok Thiam, Low's former assistant who informed the Malaysian authorities about Jho Low's whereabouts in Macau, had died.
Kee had returned to Malaysia on May 3rd after five years of living abroad.
