KUALA LUMPUR - Deputy Prime Minister Datuk Seri Ahmad Zahid Hamidi called unity government members to give a standing ovation to the prime minister who was once marginalised and humiliated.
He said now after Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim is now the country's prime minister.
"In this Merdeka Hall, we witnessed individuals who were marginalised and humiliated, and after 25 years, one of those individuals is now our Prime Minister," he said.
He said Barisan Nasional had deliberately chose the Merdeka Hall at Umno headquarters as the venue of the convention, "not just because many on this stage were once had phobia of it. However, things have changed with Malaysia Madani."
He said this shows the unity government was creating "new politics".
"We will continue to strengthen what we have in the constitution and strengthen our Prime Minister. Applause is not enough, let's give a standing ovation to our Prime Minister," he said.
The Umno President described Anwar as an old friend.
"Anwar, you are the real Anwar Ibrahim. If we continue to support the Prime Minister, we can bring about many better things. We can definitely win in GE16.
"There are people who don't like us. Let's just ignore them and move forward," he told thousands who turned up at the Unity Government's National Convention.
He said unity in diversity remains their foundation.
"We respect our differences," he said.
"BN and Umno request the Prime Minister to return Malaysia to the forefront among Southeast Asian countries.
"PM, don't worry. I, Deputy prime minister Fadhilah, and other leaders will support you in making our dreams come true," he said, adding that Umno and BN, even with 30 parliamentary seats strenghtens the government.
