JAKARTA - The Indonesian Democratic Party of Struggle (PDI-P) has announced Central Java governor Ganjar Pranowo as its presidential candidate for the upcoming election next year.
Ganjar, 54, has been the governor of Central Java since 2013 and a PDI-P cadre.
"I am appointing Ganjar Pranowo and increasing his duties as a presidential candidate," said PDI-P chairman Megawati Soekarnoputri today.
According to her, Ganjar is proof of his party's success in providing political education and a backup line for leadership continuity.
The announcement made at Istana Batutulis, Bogor, West Java, was attended by Indonesian President Joko Widodo, who is also a PDI-P cadre and Puan Maharani who is the head of PDI-P’s Central Leadership Council.
At the event, Joko Widodo hoped that the new leadership would continue the strategic programme that had been announced to create fair and equitable wellbeing.
Ganjar asked all party cadres to give their feedback in the form of criticism and suggestions by stating "this is the moment for us to join hands and unite”.
