SHAH ALAM - A total of 32,976 cases of road accidents were recorded across the country last year involving contributors to the Social Security Organisation (Socso) of which 651 cases were fatal.
Socso deputy chief executive (Operations) John Riba Marin said 45 per cent of the number of people who died due to road accidents were aged 35 and below.
"This means that on average, every day two deaths are caused by accidents while travelling or commuting from or to work," he said when reading out the speech of Socso chief executive officer Datuk Seri Dr Mohammed Azman Aziz Mohammed, today.
He was speaking at the launching ceremony of the Selangor contingent Road Safety Campaign in conjunction with Aidilfitri at Dataran Kemerdekaan in Shah Alam by Selangor police chief Datuk Hussein Omar Khan.
Meanwhile, Hussein said in a press conference the Selangor police will take strict action against individuals found playing with firecrackers and fireworks beyond midnight across the state.
He explained that police will tighten control and monitoring in all locations, especially residential areas in all districts in the state to ensure the public complies with the regulations.
On the seven-day Op Selamat 20 that kicked off today, Hussein said police would focus on 62 congestion-prone hotspots and six accident-prone locations, especially in the suburbs. - BERNAMA
