SHAH ALAM - The accident that robbed eight teenagers lives from riding lajak bicycles in Johor Bahru in 2017 should serve as a lesson for parents not to let their children roam around as they please.
Independent criminologist Datuk Shahul Hamid Abdul Rahim said only one small mistake can lead to an accident which led to female clerk being charged in court for reckless driving.
In that case, he said there was no doubt that the parents were negligent for letting their children, who are minors, roam around late at night.
"The court's decision can not be disputed. This is a great lesson for parents to not to let their children roam around late at night.
"It doesn't matter whether they are riding a bicycle or a motorcycle. Sometimes there are even those who ride without a licence or even a helmet.
"These riders' dangerous act, especially mat rempits not only endanger themselves but also other drivers," he told Sinar yesterday.
Shahul also reminded motorists to drive more carefully and prudently to avoid any unforeseen accidents.
He said a driver's negligence can also cause the accidents
"When drivers have difficulty in controlling the vehicle or drive in a semi-conscious state, it will cause an accident.
"Take this case as a lesson," he said.
