KUALA NERUS - A man lost several fingers in on his right hand due to homemade fireworks in an incident at Kampung Gong Pak Damat, here on Monday.
The incident occurred at 3.30am, the 27-year-old victim suffered injuries in several parts of his body.
Terengganu police chief Datuk Rohaimi Md Isa said early investigations found the victim had made his homemade fireworks using ball firecrackers and Polyvinyl Chloride (PVC) pipes causing a large explosion.
"The victim suffered serious injuries with his left hand being dismembered from the wrist and losing several fingers on his right hand along with other injuries on his body.
"The victim was sent to the Sultanah Nur Zahirah Hospital's (HSNZ) intensive care unit (ICU)," he said in a statement here on Monday.
He said the case was being investigated under Section 8 of the Explosives Act 1957.
"The incident is the second case in Terengganu of homemade fireworks causing serious injuries.
"The efforts to capture distributors and fireworks sellers are currently ongoing," he said.
Rohaimi said since March 23, to April 9, 17 criminal charges involving arrests and fireworks seizures were done involving seizures worth RM18,835 and 18 arrests.
"Police have given a stern warning to any individuals found distributing or selling fireworks without permits.
"Those found guilty of the offence will be charged under Section 8 of the Explosives Act 1957 that provides a prison sentence of up to seven years or a fine of RM0,000 or both," he stated.
It had been reported that four teenagers were injured while one was almost blinded while playing with modified fireworks in an incident at on April 6.
