UTP maintains position as number one university in Asean for engineering and technology

KUALA LUMPUR - Universiti Teknologi Petronas (UTP) has maintained its strong position in the prestigious Quacquarelli Symonds (QS) World University Rankings by Subject 2023, placing the institution among the best universities in the world.

In a statement, UTP said the results showcased the university's strengths in three broad subject areas namely engineering and technology, natural sciences as well as arts and humanities, while in terms of subject rankings, it has made significant improvements and risen in eight subjects.

According to the statement, five out of seven of the Engineering and Technology subjects have shown commendable improvements in the latest edition of the rankings with Petroleum Engineering ranked 16th improving six places from its previous 22nd placing while Mineral and Mining Engineering is ranked 49th in the world. "With these rankings, UTP has maintained its standing as the number one university in the nation for four consecutive years for both subjects," read the statement.

In addition, the rankings also placed Chemical Engineering at the 99th position in the world, breaking into the Top 100 for the first time.

The results for both Electrical and Electronic Engineering and Mechanical Engineering have also improved notably by moving up one band, with the former at 151-200 from its previous ranking of 201-250 and the latter rising from 251-300 to 201-250.

Meanwhile, Civil Engineering as well as Computer Science and Information System have retained their position in the rankings, at the Top 200 and Top 450 respectively.

For Engineering and Technology broad subject areas, UTP is now ranked 200th globally and is the fourth highest-ranked university in the nation. It has also consolidated its position as the number one private university in ASEAN for Engineering and Technology broad subject areas.

The non-Engineering and Technology subjects have also recorded significant improvements in the rankings. Materials Science is now ranked in the Top 350 (up one band from 351-400), Chemistry at Top 400 (up two bands from 451-500) and Business and Management Studies at Top 500 (up one band from 501-550).

Meanwhile, UTP vice-chancellor Prof Dr Mohamed Ibrahim Abdul Mutalib said that the ranking was indicative of the depth and breadth of the university's high-quality programmes and a testament to the high level of academic and research excellence displayed by its faculty, students and staff.

"This outcome speaks to our comprehensive strategy to be a sustainable, dynamic, digitalised university delivering global impact in engineering, science, technology, humanities and innovation,” he said in the statement.

Mohamed Ibrahim said UTP would continue to lead for excellence in academic, research and students’ experience by providing a world class learning and teaching environment to educate the next generation of responsible leaders and model global citizens.
