LANGKAWI - The Kedah and Perlis Malaysian Maritime Enforcement Agency (MMEA) today apprehended a class C fishing vessel nine nautical miles southwest of Singa Island, here.
Director Maritime First Admiral Romli Mustafa said the trawler was stopped at 4pm while it was headed out of the island.
He said investigations found the vessel to have been fitted with seven communication devices not registered to the Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC).
"Further investigations found the vessel carrying a skipper with a crew of 24 Cambodians aged between 21 and 49 years old.
"The boat and the crew were all arrested and brought to the Bukit Malut Maritime Malaysia Jetty for further action,” he said in a statement on Sunday.
He said the case was investigated under the MCMC Act 1998 for not having an approval letter for communication devices.
Romli said the case was also investigated under the Immigration Act 1959/63 for the crew having questionable personal identification documents.
