SHAH ALAM: Pejuang has applied to join Perikatan Nasional (PN) as a component party, its president Datuk Seri Mukhriz Mahathir announced.

In a statement today, he said the official letter requesting to join the coalition was sent to PN chairman Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin yesterday.

The party’s central executive council had decided to apply to join the coalition as it would be more beneficial for all parties involved if Pejuang joined and contested under the PN logo, he added.

"The decision for this application was agreed upon by the Pejuang executive council two days ago after considering and evaluating all the options available for coalition and political cooperation.

"This is in accordance with the mandate we obtained from Pejuang's general assembly recently," he added.

He explained that it will not be sufficient for Pejuang to only form an electoral pact with other parties or coalitions to avoid seat clashes.

"With Pejuang in PN's pact, it will beneficial for all parties. Of course, this means that Pejuang's agreement with PN is not limited only to the state election which is slated to take place in June but also for the long term," he stated.

He also pointed out that the participation of Pejuang as a member of the PN component is to ensure that there is no division of the Malay vote in the upcoming election.

It was reported last month that Mukhriz has held meetings with the leaders of both PN and Pakatan Harapan (PH) for cooperation efforts in the upcoming state election.

On Feb 19, Pas election director Datuk Seri Muhammad Sanusi Md Nor confirmed that there had been a meeting between Mukhriz and Pas top leadership recently.

Kedah PH chairman Datuk Mahfuz Omar also confirmed that Mukhriz met him in Kuala Lumpur about two months ago, to discuss possible cooperation between Pejuang and PH for the state election.

Mahfuz said any cooperation could only be decided by the PH presidential council.
