SHAH ALAM - The government should explain what is meant by "capital injection" and why there is a huge increase for it in the recently tabled Budget 2023.
The Institute for Democracy and Economic Affairs (IDEAS) Deputy Research Director, Sri Murniati Yusuf is of the opinion that the government should explain publicly what is capital injection is and why it was increased in the budget.
"We saw a significant increase in the Budget 2023 but after looking at the numbers, we found that a lot of the allocation goes to the Finance Ministry for capital injections." "It is a quite significant increase of about RM10 billion for capital injections," she said on Sinar Daily's Wacana English Edition themed 'Rationalising Madani Budget 2023'.
However, Murniati said the Budget 2023 documents don't explain why the capital injection was increased.
Capital injection is the investment of capital into a project, company, or investment in the form of cash, equity, or debt.
Commenting further, Murniati said the budget can help in many ways, especially in the economy sector, but it depends on how the government implements it.
"For example, we have cash handouts, subsidies that reach people who need them. We also have global expenditures. If these are not carried out efficiently, it could impact the budget to help the people," she added.
Today's Wacana programme also featured Universiti Malaya Social Wellbeing Research Centre Dr Zulkiply Omar and Federation of Malaysian Business Associations Chairman Datuk Abdul Malik Abdullah.
