PUTRAJAYA - A group of 10 believed to be involved in an investment fraud syndicate led by a British citizen have been remanded for six days
The remand order was issued by Putrajaya Magistrate Mohd Dinie Shazwan Ab Shukor after approving the Malaysian Anti Corruption Commission's (MACC) application on Wednesday.
The remand order will end on Feb 27.
The group, comprising five British, Philippines (two) and Malaysian (three) citizens were accompanied by the Malaysian immigration department (Immigration) special tactical team (Pastak) to the Putrajaya magistrate’s court to be issued the remand order.
Aged 39 to 59-years-old, the 10 people were arrested in an Op Tropicana raid by the MACC in collaboration with Immigration, Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission, Cyber Security Malaysia, Telekom Malaysia, the Malaysian Companies Commission, Tenaga Nasional Berhad and the Inland Revenue Board.
The operations were coordinated across the capital and Penang on Tuesday.
Those suspected of being scammers obtained roughly AUD$60 million (RM200 million) through their victims since 2019.
The group was said to have bribed authorities to maintain the safety of its members and to facilitate syndicate operations in their call centre or ‘boiler rooms’ in the country.
