TAWAU - The Sabah Islamic Religious Council (MUIS) has appointed 2,200 amil (tithe collectors) to collect zakat fitrah (title collected during Ramadan) this year, its deputy chairman Malai Ali Malai Ahmad said. He said the appointments were to make it easier for the Muslim community in Sabah to pay zakat fitrah. "The appointed amil will be on duty in mosques, surau, supermarkets, shop fronts and their homes. Over 100 amil have been appointed for the Apas, Balung, Sri Tanjong and Kalabakan areas,” he told reporters here today.
Meanwhile, Malai Ali said last year, some RM10.9 million in zakat fitrah was collected and as much as RM9.6 million was distributed to the asnaf (hardcore poor) group in the state.
The distribution of zakat for the asnaf group has been set at RM300 per individual this year, he added. - BERNAMA
