KUALA LUMPUR - The government has been urged to find a mechanism to stabilise the price of rubber and impose a floor price of at least RM4 from the current RM2-RM2.50 per kilogramme for the commodity.
"Rubber price was at a high level once but now it has gone down since the development of synthetic rubber.
"This has made life difficult for rubber smallholders, especially with the rise in the cost of living,” Zahari Kechik (PN-Jeli) said in Parliament during the debate on the royal address by the Yang di-Pertuan Agong.
Unpredictable weather has also limited rubber tapping to 16 days in a month, which if annualised comes only to six months in a year that they can go out to tap rubber, he added.
"The government helps with an annual RM800 aid during the monsoon season, so just imagine how hard their life is,” he said. - BERNAMA
