KUALA LUMPUR - Malaysia and several other Asean countries will draft a memorandum of understanding (MoU) to standardise protocols and regulations to deal with online fraud including job offers abroad.
The Communications and Digital Minister Fahmi Fadzil said the MoU will ease investigations and arrests of syndicates.
"I have met with counterparts from several Asean countries, who had previously signed and established cooperation with Singapore (to deal with online fraud).
"Several other countries including Brunei, Japan, the Philippines and Cambodia as well as Thailand have asked to be included in developing the MoU," he said, adding that it will to standardise several protocols, regulatory frameworks to facilitate investigations or arrest those involved in these fraud activities.
He told reporters at his Lembah Pantai Chinese New Year Open House here, today.
He said this when he was asked about the ministry's effort to deal with fraud syndicates offering jobs abroad through social media.
Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim, on Thursday, said that the government is considering to tighten laws to prevent Malaysians from falling into job scam trap.
He said the Communications and Digital Ministry and the cops are taking necessary steps including tightening laws.
Fahmi further said his the ministry will re-examine the Communications and Multimedia Act 1998 to impose stricter measures against parties involved in online fraud.
He said this includes immediate arrest of perpetrators or criminals involved if they are found abusing the network.
