GEORGETOWN - The Penang state government is of the opinion that June or July is the best time to hold state elections (PRN).
Penang chief minister Chow Kon Yeow said no official discussions has been made yet to determine the date to dissolve the Penang State Legislative Assembly (DUN), but he did not rule out the possibility that it will happen at the end of May.
According to him, the end date of the DUN term in each state is different, but from the politics and elections point of view, the full five years period of the national administration is on May 8.
"If the DUN is dissolved at the end of May, then the election must be held in June or July.
"What the other chief ministers of other states have been saying is true, about June or July being the most suitable time to standardise all state elections ," he said in a press conference here today.
Kon Yeow, who is also the Penang Pakatan Harapan (PH) chairman said, previously, the dissolution of state DUN's was discussed during the Menteri Besar (MB) and Chief Minister's meeting with the Prime Minister in Putrajaya and the Conference of Rulers at Istana Negara last January.
He said further discussion regarding the matter will be made in the near future, before any decision can be made.
Previously, Negeri Sembilan MB Datuk Seri Aminuddin Harun proposed to dissolve the DUN on June 1 to make way for PRN.
Meanwhile, Kedah MB Datuk Seri Muhammad Sanusi Md Nor hinted Kedah's state assembly will be dissolved around mid-June.
He said the period is deemed suitable after considering several factors including Ramadan, Aidilfitri celebration, the Hajj period and Aidiladha celebration.
Apart from Negeri Sembilan and Kedah, other states in which state elections are due this year are Penang, Selangor, Kelantan and Terengganu.
