KUALA LUMPUR - International Trade and Industry Minister Tengku Datuk Seri Zafrul Abdul Aziz has expressed his intention to contest the Umno Supreme Council member position in the coming party election.
Tengku Zafrul said he the move was significant to build a political "base".
"Yes, if given the chance I will humbly offer myself to contest for the position to contribute my service to the party," he was quoted in Astro Awani.
Tengku Zafrul had contested the Kuala Selangor parliamentary seat for Umno in the recent general election (GE15) but lost to Pakatan Harapan’s Dzulkefly Ahmad by 1,002 votes.
Tengku Zafrul added the political landscape was much more dynamic and it opens room for healthy competition.
"Umno is an experienced party and the mature leadership could overcome its ups and downs.
" I believe party leaders and grassroots want to see a more dynamic combination of leadership from various backgrounds to ensure the strengthening process post-GE15 goes well," he said.
