LABUAN - A boy is believed to have drowned while swimming in the pool of a hotel at Jalan Tanjung Purun here, today.
In the incident at about 8am, Dayan Haris Affendi, six, was pronounced dead while receiving treatment at Labuan Hospital.
Labuan Fire and Rescue Department Operations Centre (PGO) said that it received a distress call on the incident at 8.01am and a total of six members from the Labuan Sentral Fire and Rescue Station were deployed to the scene of the incident.
"The victim was handed over to the medical team for further action.
"According to the information, the victim was given cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) at the scene of the incident and then at the hospital.
"However, the victim could not be saved and was pronounced dead at the hospital," the spokesman said in a statement.
The operation ended at 8.37am.
Meanwhile, Labuan District Police Chief Superintendent Ahmad Jawila confirmed the incident and said that the victim was swimming in the pool with several other children.
"The victim's mother was by the pool watching over the victim.
"After about 15 minutes, all the children who were swimming in the pool were ordered to get out. However, the victim's mother did not see her son and she entered the hotel to search for him.
"A few minutes later, some other children screamed at the pool area because they found the victim in the pool unconscious," he said.
He also said that the initial investigation found that no element of crime was identified in this incident.
"However, further investigation is resumed and the public with information related to this incident is requested to contact any nearby police station or directly contact the Labuan District Police Headquarters (IPD) at 087-412222," he said.
