SHAH ALAM - The Coalition Against Multiplicity of Unions (Camu) president Rudy Rusly today urged Malaysian Trade Union Congress (MTUC) and its president to withdraw their support for Trade Union (Amendment) Bill 2022.

The pledge was made to the Human Resources Ministry and its minister recently, he added.

Rudy said MTUC's actions now seem to contradict their previous agreement to unanimously reject the amendment as decided by MTUC in two meetings last year, citing regret and disappointment with MTUC.

"MTUC has turned their backs on the workers, their interests, and the trade union movement.

"In the first meeting session on June 26, 2022, the General Council Special Meeting unanimously decided to reject the bill and urged MTUC leadership to voice our standpoint to the government, namely to the Human Resource Ministry.

"In the following 42nd MTUC Representative Conference on July 2, 2022, MTUC president Mohd Effendy Abdul Ghani shared concerns about the proposal presented in the Trade Union (Amendment) Bill 2022, particularly on the trade unions' diversity, which needs in-depth research," he said in a statement on Friday.

On Jan 5, the MTUC 2022–2025 leadership delegation paid a courtesy call on Human Resources Minister V Sivakumar.

"During the visit, MTUC top leadership including the president and the secretary-general Kamarul Baharin Mansor had informed that the union supported the Trade Union Bill approved in the Dewan Rakyat on Oct 5 2022 to the Human Resource minister and its higher officials," Rudy said adding that MTUC leadership had betrayed the foreign workers and Malaysian Trade Unions through this action.

"All General Council members have been deceived by MTUC for the 2022–2025 session. Sadly, what we witnessed today is an unfortunate event for the Malaysian trade union movement.

"The MTUC, which was supposed to be a fighter for the workers since 1949, failed to play its leading role in defending the workers' rights," he said.
