KUALA LUMPUR - Umno president Datuk Seri Ahmad Zahid Hamidi has fired his veiled salvo at a party leader who spewed unsavoury remarks against the party when the latter contested in last year’s national poll.
Though he did not name names, the tacit jab was ostensibly directed at former youth chief Khairy Jamaluddin given how the latter had in his campaign trail for the Sungai Buloh parliamentary seat claimed that he would one day cleanse Umno from corruption.
"There were those who run down the party in his election campaign. Claimed that Umno is corrupt. That Umno has gone astray. His words were even used by the opposition [for their propaganda].
"But today, the ‘tortoise’ has resurfaced and reared his head once again,” jabbed Zahid when delivering his policy speech that was delivered in the party’s 2022 Annual Assembly that began today.
Khairy and Zahid got into a friendly fire in last year’s 15th General Election with the former health minister hinting that the latter’s decision to field him in Sungai Buloh was akin to killing his political career.
Zahid however denied the claim, saying that it was Khairy who asked to be fielded there.
