KUALA LUMPUR - Jelebu MP Datuk Seri Jalaluddin Alias denies the accusation that he and nine others from Barisan Nasional (BN) who signed the statutory declaration (SD) to support Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin as Prime Minister after the 15th General Election (GE15) was an act of betraying the party.
Jalaluddin said after BN decided its final stance to join the unity government under Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim, they agreed to rescind the SD.
"I don’t think it is a matter of turning your back or betraying the party. A betrayal would mean standing with the opposition to take down a BN candidate when we face GE15. That is a betrayal towards the party.
"When we faced GE15, we put our best efforts to ensure BN’s victory. I contested on BN’s ticket,” he said when met after the 2022 Puteri Wing Umno general assembly at the Kuala Lumpur World Trade Centre (WTCKL), here, today.
Umno president Datuk Seri Ahmad Zahid Hamidi on Wednesday revealed 10 BN MPs including Umno signed the SD to support Muhyiddin as the prime minister after GE15.
The BN chairman and deputy prime minister disclosed the information during his speech at the special briefing session held behind closed doors in conjunction with the 2022 Umno general assembly.
Jalaluddin added he and the nine MPs could only be considered as betraying and backstabbing the party if they continued supporting Muhyiddin as prime minister after BN decided to join the unity government with Pakatan Harapan (PH).
Due to that, he said he did not see Umno president or deputy president’s speech as negative. "We must thoroughly observe the contents of it as Umno is moving towards the future with a concept of unity and solidarity."
Zahid had said that he was prepared to forgive the 10 MPs for signing SDs to support Muhyiddin as the prime minister in GE15.
However, the Bagan Datuk MP said he along with the Umno Disciplinary Board will continue to observe the movements of the MPs.
