KUALA LUMPUR - A total of 800 silat exponents from 16 countries will compete in the 2023 Sarawak Premier International Silat Championships which will take place at the Kuching Indoor Stadium from Feb 27 to March 5.
Sarawak Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg said Sarawak was ready to host the inaugural world-class championship and to receive thousands of world martial arts lovers.
"In fact, preparations in terms of logistics are now at their best ahead of this premier championship.
"The reception for this inaugural edition is very good when countries such as Indonesia, Singapore and the United Kingdom will also come to the city of Kuching during the week of the event," he said in a statement today.
In the meantime, the Deputy President of Rumpun Silat Sarawak (RSS) said the tournament will be a benchmark and a pioneer for RRS to organise a series of silat tournaments in the future.
He said that RSS was committed to ensure that the tournament was a success.
"We don't want to make this tournament a 'one-off' only, we intend to create history because Malaysia has never organised such a tournament.
"I hope the exponents will be able to showcase world-class action and a high level of sportsmanship,” he said.
The 2023 Sarawak Premier International Silat Championship offers a cash prize of USD20,000 (RM87,510) for the overall champion and for the first time a championship belt is introduced for the overall champion. - BERNAMA
