MELAKA - Guests staying at a hotel in Bandar Hilir were left in shock when they spotted a female tapir in the parking lot on the fifth floor of the building here this morning.
Operations Commander from Central Melaka Fire and Rescue Station (BBP) Senior Fire Officer II, Sofian Hassan said eight firefighters were rushed to the scene immediately after receiving an emergency call at 9.04am.
The tapir was finally caught at 1.59pm.
"Since it is a protected wild animal, we have contacted the Melaka Wildlife Protection and National Park Department (Perhilitan) for further assistance," he said in a statement.'
Meanwhile, Melaka Perhilitan director Mohd Firdhaus Mahmood said he has been receiving calls from the public after spotting the animal.
He said the female tapir which is estimated to weigh around 250 kilograms, is believed to be in search of food.
"Previously, we had received complaints about the presence of tapir around this area but had not been able to catch it.
"When it was found trapped, the rescue work was easier and the female tapir could be saved," he said.
