BEAUFORT - A man discovered a World War II bomb, approximately 60 metres away from his house here.
The man, who was apparently excavating the ground to install a substation, found the bomb in Kampung Batu 60, here.
It is believed that the bomb was found on Dec 25 but the report was only made on Dec 30 out of fear for the safety of the man's family, who also lived in that area.
District Police Chief Deputy Superintendent Yusoff Zaki Mat Yaacob said a report was made by the 48-year-old man who found the bomb.
"The complainant informed us that on the day of the incident, at about 5 pm, the object that was suspected to be a bomb was found after the area was excavated to construct a substation.
"The complainant, who is worried for the safety of his family and neighborhood, has lodged a report at the police station for further action," he said when contacted by Sinar Harian on Sunday.
Following the report, a team of police was deployed to the scene to monitor and secure the area by cordoning it off from public entry.
"The initial inspection suggested that the bomb was suspected to be from the Second World War era.
"The distance between the bomb's location and the complainant's house was approximately 60 meters.
"The police are currently controlling the area while waiting for the bomb disposal unit from Sabah police contingent headquarters (IPK) to destroy the bomb," he said.
