SHAH ALAM - A sad atmosphere enveloped the Mun Choong National Chinese School (SJKC) in Jalan Ipoh, Kuala Lumpur on Friday when families, friends, teachers, and students gathered for a memorial service for the Batang Kali landslide victims.

The Star reported that some parents were seen arriving at the school hall with their children an hour earlier, for the scheduled live session at 9am which will be attended by the entire school staff, students, and their families.

Condolences written on cards were hung on the wishing tree placed in the school hall.

Before the memorial began, a one-minute silence was observed for the 11 victims who were part of the school.

There were six teachers, three students, a canteen operator, and workers among them.

Mun Choong SJKC principal Cheong Kam Yin said he hoped for all families to be able to overcome the grief of this tragedy and those who have perished.

"We will always remember you all," he said.

Those who were present in the hall shed tears when they saw the final tribute videos for the victims.

A total of 92 victims were involved in the landslide incident on Dec 17 at a campsite near Father's Organic Farm, Jalan Genting-Batang Kali.

Sixty-one people survived, while 31 perished. Eighteen of them were adults, and 13 were children.
