SHAH ALAM - Flood mitigation projects must be implemented as a long-term solution in states that are frequently affected by this recurring disaster.

Pertubuhan Ikram Malaysia (Ikram) President Badlishah Sham Baharin said the implementation of the project could simplify the process and solve drainage issues in areas that experience continued rainfall.

"I hope the government could implement the flood mitigation project as soon as possible, in addition to building multiple infrastructure projects to avoid recurring floods every year," he said to Sinar on Wednesday.

Badlishah said the close cooperation between the government agencies, non-governmental organisations (NGOs), and the community should be increased to ensure aid is channelled regularly and frequently.

"I hope this matter could be improved so that when a disaster such as a flood occurs, there is a strong cooperation between the government agencies, non-governmental organisations (NGOs), and the community to provide assistance to those affected," he said.

He said the aid given should be coordinated and directed toward areas that are heavily affected.

Ikram has mobilised assistance to states that were frequently affected by floods, such as Kelantan and Terengganu.

Established in 2010, Ikram manages several agencies which is manoeuvred to help flood victims throughout the country.
