SHAH ALAM - Ikatan Komuniti Selamat Organisation says that landslides tragedies can be contained if all parties mobilise all available resources to prevent disasters before they occur.
Its chairman Tan Sri Lee Lam Thye said when the commitment to monitor and prevent was carried out, it could save many lives.
"The matter has happened frequently, but after various discussions, investigations, studies, and reports, disasters still continue to occur because there are no preventive measures taken.
"That approach should be changed by this new government.
"If preventive measures were taken after the previous disasters, it is certain that many lives could be saved from being accident victims," he said in a statement on Sunday.
On Friday, the media reported that 94 victims were involved in the landslide at 2.24 am.
The incident happened on the side of the road near Father's Organic Farm and crashed into a campsite close to the road.
According to Lee, the condition of the land in an area with bad weather conditions should also be classified as a risk area, and disasters would always occur if not monitored.
"Local authorities should conduct strict monitoring by requesting an Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA) report from the organisers before organising any program or activity.
"This step is a mandatory step that should be followed by all parties who want to implement programmes in areas that involve the environment," he said.
He said the government needs to realise that disasters are very risky and they must play an important role in protecting the public.
"This is because this kind of incident is not the first, but it has happened many times.
"Therefore, re-examination and enforcement of the law as well as strict prohibitions should be put into practice to prevent incidents like this from happening," he said.
Lee also suggested that a provision could be made to apply existing technology in detecting ground movement to issue early warnings of danger.
