SHAH ALAM - The move made by the leadership of Pribumi Bersatu Malaysia (Bersatu) in Sabah to leave the party is the right decision, says Umno President Datuk Seri Ahmad Zahid Hamidi.
He said even though it was difficult, the move needed to be done for the sake of the future of the state.
"Right decision made by Sabah's leaders.
"It is a difficult decision but was still made for the sake of the future of the state and the interests of the people of Sabah," he said in a post on Facebook on Saturday.
It was reported that the Bersatu leadership in Sabah made the decision to leave the party.
The announcement was made by Gabungan Rakyat Sabah (GRS) Chairman, Datuk Seri Hajiji Noor after considering the state of the country's current political landscape.
The Chief Minister of Sabah also said that the unanimous decision was in the interest of Sabah, unity and fulfilling the wishes and aspirations of the people to continue fighting under the auspices of a local party.
He said the action of Bersatu Sabah leadership to leave the party was on the basis that it can no longer be defended to remain the status quo.
He explained that this was because at the Federal level, Bersatu was the opposition while GRS has pledged to support the Unity Government led by Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim.
Following that, he said, a new local party will be established but collectively they will be members of GRS.
