MELAKA - Melaka has launched its 5G coverage network officially today, covering 41 on-air areas in Melaka Tengah with a 46 per cent coverage in residential areas.
State senior Investment, Industry, Entrepreneur Development and Cooperatives Committee chairman Datuk Seri Ab Rauf Yusoh said with the service, the state government intends to be a smart city pioneer in the country and create various activities capable of economic generation.
"In the Industrial Revolution 4.0 (IR 4.0) era, business digitisaion will be one of the important factors viewed as catalysts to attract foreign investors.
"In addition, the state government, with Melaka ICT Holdings (MITCH), have also drafted various programmes, including encouraging cashless payments in tourist areas,” he told reporters after officiating the launch of the Smart Melaka International Conference 2022 and 5G in Melaka in Banda Hilir here today.
He added that the government was developing a new digital framework through the Melaka Super Apps that will bring added value to the digitalisation of the tourism industry for the next three or four years.
Ab Rauf said the app would cover all areas in Melaka, including tourist areas, allowing users to obtain information such as the history, location and interesting food, as well as purchase tourism product tickets using their smartphones.
"The development of this app will be done in partnership with any tech company interested in developing it, and currently there are ten companies that have submitted their interest but we will choose the best,” he added.
Meanwhile, state Education, Technology and Telecommunications Committee chairman Datuk Rais Yasin, who was also at the launch, said that he was expecting 100 areas in Melaka to receive 5G coverage by the end of this year.
He said 5G coverage in the state would be increased under Phase 2 of the Melaka 5G Implementation Plan by Digital Nasional Berhad (DNB) with an added 74 locations in Melaka Tengah, Alor Gajah and Jasin starting early next year.
"Thanks to the state government’s commitment, the implementation of 5G can be brought up from mid-2023 to the middle of this year.
