SHAH ALAM – Perikatan Nasional (PN) chairman Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin and Pas chairman Tan Sri Abdul Hadi Awang are both ‘seasoned and powerful leaders’, making them perfect opposition leaders, says political analysts.
Political analyst, Ibrahim Suffian, who is also the co-founder and director of programs at the Merdeka Center opined that both have the experience and support from the people, to perform the role of an opposition leader.
"This will help maintain checks and balances on the new government which is pertinent in curent times,” he told Sinar Daily.
Ibrahim also stated that Muhyiddin has a better advantage since he had been a prime minister and had govern the people as well as the nation.
"Muhyiddin was a premier before and has a long career and service in politics. This is definitely a huge advantage for him,” he added.
Another political analyst and law lecturer Professor Dr Nik Ahmad Kamal Nik Mahmood said both Muhyiddin and Hadi have their own capabilities.
Nik said Muhyiddin has experience in the government as deputy prime minister and prime minister, while Hadi has been an opposition leader throughout most of his political career.
"I see both have their own unique capabilities. Muhyiddin has been in the ruling government for many years and briefly as opposition leader whereas Hadi has been an opposition leader for most of his career. This means they both have what is takes to be a good opposition leader,” he added.
Meanwhile, political analyst Professor Dr Azizuddin Sani expressed that Muhyiddin is a better candidate for the position of a opposition leader as he is the PN coalition chairman.
"It should be Muhyiddin. Unless PN decides to name Hadi. There is no need to elaborate further since he is the head of Perikatan Nasional,” he added
