SHAH ALAM - A probe by an NGO found that the data of more than 11.6 million Malaysian WhatsApp users being sold online was recycled from a much older Facebook data leak.
Yayasan Digital Malaysia (YDM), a non-profit that works to improve digital literacy said a forensic study showed 20 per cent out of 500 million leaked data claimed by hackers were from Facebook users worldwide.
A further cross-check showed out of that numbers 11,675,894 million numbers were on Facebook.
"We believe the issue of national cyber security is a major issue that needs to be highlighted and investigated and verified,” head of Digital Innovation of Malaysia Digital Foundation, Mohd Fazli Azran said in a media statement.
He said measures to curb the leak needs to be taken as it concerns national security.
