KUALA TERENGGANU - The crisis in the formation of a new government and the election of the 10th Prime Minister to lead the country may not happen if the candidate appointed is among the Pas leadership.
Terengganu Umno Youth chief Tengku Haphiz Tengku Putera said the leader from Pas should be more qualified to be nominated as Prime Minister based on the number of parliamentary seats won by the party in the 15th General Election (GE15).
However, he said, the decision could not be changed since Pas adhered to the Perikatan Nasional (PN) agreement in which it only nominated Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin as the candidate for Prime Minister in GE15.
"He (Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin), on the other hand is seen to have failed to understand the wishes expressed by the Yang di-Pertuan Agong Al-Sultan Abdullah Ri'ayatuddin Al-Mustafa Billah Shah who wants to resolve the country's political crisis by proposing the formation of a unity government.
"His Majesty's wishes were rejected on the grounds that PN cannot compromise with Pakatan Harapan (PH) because they are not on the same page when it comes to their respective political development ideologies.
"Meanwhile, what His Majesty wants is a new approach to be an effective solution.
"If not, even by the end of the term there will not be a coalition of political parties capable of forming a government," he said when contacted, here, on Thursday.
In the same development, Tengku Haphiz said, the grassroots of the party wanted the 30 BN Members of Parliament elected by the people in GE15 to be in the same direction to elect the leader of the country.
"Even though the number of BN MPs is only 30 and we are more comfortable to form an opposition bloc, but at this time it may be His Majesty's will that we can save the country from falling into a political crisis.
"Therefore, we request that what all the Members of Parliament (BN) voice should be a congregation, to bring a view that follows the wishes of the party's grassroots.
"Five million BN members who are also Malaysians do not want the decisions made for the country to be only concerned with personal matters," he said.
He explained that the two governments that were formed on a purely political basis before did not produce results that were seen to be able to bring major and positive changes to the country.
"We have gone through governments that were formed on a purely political basis such as in 2018 (PH) and 2020 (PN).
"Both could not be saved until the establishment of the ‘Malaysian Family’ government led by Datuk Seri Ismail Sabri Yaakob.
"Don't get caught up again with the expression of the formation of a nation.
"The next five years will be a more challenging period, especially in 2023 when the world economic crisis will repeat itself.
"Therefore, we need all parties and all nations to unite to defend the country," he said.
The results of the GE15 on November 19 saw that no party coalition got a simple majority to form a government, which caused the formation of a new government to be pending until today.
The Yang di-Pertuan Agong, Al-Sultan Abdullah Riayatuddin Al-Mustafa Billah Shah together with Malay Rulers would hold a special meeting at Istana Negara, today.
It was understood that His Majesty would seek the views of the rulers regarding the deadlock in the formation of the federal government.
