JOHOR BAHRU - Umno president Datuk Seri Ahmad Zahid Hamidi has been urged to resign immediately following Barisan Nasional's (BN) defeat in the 15th General Election (GE15).
Menteri Besar, Datuk Onn Hafiz Ghazi said, Ahmad Zahid needs to step down from the top position as Datuk Seri Najib Razak did in 2018.
He explained that this selfless deed will help Umno to take the initial step to restore and strengthen the party.
"We are all aware that a Malay political tsunami has occurred, where the Malays have rejected Umno. Umno has collapsed.
"Umno and BN only won nine parliamentary seats in Johor meanwhile, we did not win a single parliamentary seat in Perlis, Kedah, Penang, Melaka, Kelantan or Terengganu," he said in a statement on Sunday.
According to the Johor BN election operations director, the Umno leadership needs to pay attention to the voice of the people that was expressed through their votes during GE15, even though it was a bitter fact to swallow.
"Many Umno, MCA and MIC leaders of are of caliber and possess potential but have succumbed because we do not want to listen to the voices of the grassroots. "We all need to be brave enough to make changes for the better for the future of this party.
"Efforts to restore and improve this party need to start now. If we don't change now, we won't win a single seat in the future," he said.
In GE15, BN only won nine parliamentary seats in Johor, namely Parit Sulong, Ayer Hitam, Simpang Renggam, Tenggara, Kota Tinggi, Pengerang, Pontian, Tanjung Piai and Sembrong.
