KOTA TINGGI - A married couple died while their three-year-old son broke his leg when the car they were travelling in was involved in an accident after the couple finished voting in an incident at kilometre 46 of Jalan Johor Bahru-Mersing here on Saturday.
Kota Tinggi District Police Chief Superintendent Hussin Zamora said the accident happened at 12.08 in the afternoon which involved a Perodua Alza driven by the family and a four-wheel drive Toyota Hilux.
"The result of the investigation found that the victims were travelling in a Perodua Alza on the way to Skudai, Johor Bahru after finishing voting at Lok Heng near here.
"The Perodua Alza which was heading towards Johor Bahru skidded while going through a corner before entering the opposite lane towards Mersing.
"The MPV then collided with the Toyota Hilux in wet road conditions due to rain," he said in a statement on Saturday.
He said, as a result of the accident, the driver of the Perodua Alza, a 37-year-old man, and his 31-year-old wife died at the scene while their son's right leg was broken.
The driver of the Toyota Hilux, who is 60 years old, escaped unhurt.
Hussin said the case was investigated under Section 41(1) of the Road Transport Act (APJ) 1987.
Meanwhile, the Operations Commander from the Kota Tinggi Fire and Rescue Station Senior Fire Superintendent II Mohd Rafi Mohd Normak said a total of eight firefighters were deployed to the scene.
Rafi said the husband and wife were pinned in their respective seats.
"The victim's child was removed by the public and sent to the hospital before the fire department arrived.
The fire department’s personnel removed the two victims with special equipment.
"Both victims were pronounced dead at the scene by the medical team who attended before the bodies were handed over to the police for further action," he said.
