Floods: 221 residents in Klang evacuated

KLANG – 221 residents were evacuated following the floods that hit several areas here yesterday, making the total number of victims as of today increase to 719 people.

Malaysian Fire and Rescue Services (JBPM) Department Director Norazam Khamis said the latest evacuation involved four locations in the Meru area.

"The evacuation of 221 residents involved four locations namely Sekolah Kebangsaan Binjai (170), Meru Indah (five) Sekolah Rendah Agama (SRA) Meru (19) and Rantau Panjang (27).

"As of now, the total number of victims involved were placed in seven temporary evacuation centres (PPS) that were opened, this included Sekolah Kebangsaan Sungai Binjai, Meru (628), SRA Meru (19), Masjid Al-Falah (41), Dewan Orang Ramai Meru (four), Sekolah Kebangsaan (SK) Sungai Sireh (awaiting census) and Dewan Rantau Panjang (27),” he said in a statement today.

Norazam said a total of six fire departments were involved in the rescue operations.

"Among the fire departments involved were Bestari Fire and Rescue Department, Kapar Fire and Rescue Department, Kuala Selangor Fire and Rescue Department, Tanjong Karang Fire and Rescue Department.

"In total the flood rescue operations involved 127 firemen, 12 boats, 15 fire department utilities and 20 machineries,” he said.

On Thursday, water had risen in a few areas here following a heavy downpour that lasted several hours.
